B. A. English Education

The B.A. English Education at Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development prepares you to teach English and to apply language skills in many settings. It sits within the Faculty of Languages Education and is taught full-time at the Kumasi campus. Entry is less competitive, so it is a realistic option if your grades are reasonable.

What you will learn and practise

Programmes of this kind usually combine the study of English language and literature with teaching methods. You work on both your own command of English and the techniques needed to teach it effectively in a classroom. That means developing clear writing, careful reading, and the ability to explain grammar and style to different kinds of learners.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry is described as less competitive. That means it is not as difficult to get into as many other degree programmes in Ghana, but you still need to meet the basic WASSCE requirements. The university asks for full-time study at the Kumasi campus. If your grades are around the average for SHS leavers, this is worth applying for.

What you can do after graduation

Graduates commonly go into teaching at basic and senior high schools. The communication skills you build also open doors in writing, editing, media, and training. Many English graduates later pursue professional teaching qualifications or postgraduate study.
