B.Sc. in Geological Science

Geological science is the study of the Earth – the materials it is made of, the structures under our feet, and the processes that continue to change it. In this B.Sc. programme at C. K. What geological science programmes cover

Geological science programmes usually cover a core set of topics: mineralogy and petrology, which deal with rocks and minerals; structural geology, which looks at how rock layers fold and fault; hydrogeology, the study of underground water; and geophysics, which uses instruments to map what lies below the surface. The training also builds practical skills in field mapping, logging rock exposures, sampling soils and water, and interpreting laboratory results. It is a degree for people who like solving puzzles with real-world data and who are happy to work both in a lab and outside.

How hard it is to get a place

This is a less competitive programme compared with many other science degrees in Ghana. The School of Physical Sciences admits students from General Science and Technical Studies backgrounds, so those are the SHS routes that make you eligible to apply. Because the programme is less competitive, a solid WASSCE result may be sufficient, but you should still check the university's admission requirements to see whether your specific results qualify.

What geological science graduates do

Graduates of geological science programmes work in industries that deal with the ground and its resources. These include mining and mineral exploration, oil and gas prospecting, water supply and hydrogeology, civil engineering, and environmental protection. Typical employers are mining companies, the Geological Survey Authority, construction firms planning roads and dams, drilling companies, and environmental consultancies. Some graduates also go into teaching or research, especially after further study.
