Check if you qualifyNautical Science is the professional study of operating and navigating ships. This degree at Regional Maritime University prepares you for a demanding but rewarding career at sea and in the maritime industry. Read on to learn what the programme involves, how easy or hard it is to get in, and where it can take you.
What Nautical Science involves
Programmes of this kind typically cover navigation, ship stability, meteorology, maritime law, cargo operations, and shipboard safety. You will learn to read nautical charts, use radar and electronic navigation systems, and respond to emergencies. The training also develops leadership and communication skills, because deck officers are responsible for the crew and the safety of the ship.
How hard it is to get a place
Entry to this programme is less competitive than to many other engineering and technology degrees. That means it is not as difficult to get a place, provided you meet the subject requirements. The published requirements say that candidates with Elective Mathematics, Geography and any other elective subject can also apply. If these subjects apply to you, you should confirm with the university that your grades satisfy the general admission requirements.
What you can do after graduation
A Nautical Science degree typically leads to a career as a deck officer on merchant ships, with opportunities to rise to captain. Many graduates also work in port management, maritime logistics, marine insurance, ship surveying, and maritime safety. The degree also provides a basis for further study in maritime administration or related fields.
