What critical care nursing involves
Critical care nursing is the care of patients whose conditions are immediately life-threatening and need constant observation and rapid response. Programmes of this kind usually cover advanced assessment of patients, life support and ventilation, the use of monitoring equipment, and communication with families in high-stress situations. You also learn to make quick judgments, work as part of a team, and remain calm under pressure, all of which are core skills in intensive care and emergency work.
How hard it is to get a place
This programme is less competitive to enter than many other degree courses in the health field. The published entry requirement is three electives from General Arts, Science, or Health Sciences in your SHS results. Because the programme is less competitive, you may have a realistic chance with these subjects, but you should check whether your own grades qualify with the college directly.
What you can do after graduating
Most graduates of critical care nursing go on to work in hospital intensive care units, where they look after patients who are seriously ill or recovering from major surgery. Others work in emergency departments, cardiac care units, or high-dependency settings. With experience, you can move into charge nurse roles, staff development, or teaching, and some nurses specialise further in areas such as paediatric critical care or trauma.
