Check if you qualifyThis degree brings together the study of economic principles with a closer look at how industries, markets, and firms behave. It is offered at the University of Mines and Technology's Faculty of Integrated Management Science, and it is designed for students who want to understand the choices that shape markets and economies.
What economics and industrial organization covers
Programmes of this kind usually explore how markets work, why industries are structured the way they are, and how firms compete with each other. You study core economic theory, then go deeper into topics like market power, pricing, competition policy, and the relationship between businesses and government. The field builds strong analytical and quantitative skills, as well as the ability to interpret data and think logically about real-world economic problems.
How hard it is to get a place
Entry to this programme is less competitive than many other degree options at the university, but you still need to meet the official subject requirements. These include credits in any three of a list of subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, ICT, Elective Mathematics, Economics, History, and others. Alternatively, you can qualify with credits in Economics and/or Elective Mathematics plus one or two other approved subjects, or with credits in any three business-related subjects such as Accounting, Business Management, Economics, Costing, ICT, and Elective Mathematics. Check your WASSCE results against the full list to see if you are eligible.
What you can do after graduation
Graduates from economics and industrial organization programmes typically move into roles where they analyse markets, advise on policy, or help businesses make better decisions. You could work in economic research, banking, consultancy, government ministries and agencies, or regulatory bodies. The combination of economics knowledge and industry focus makes this degree useful for careers that require understanding both how markets function and how particular sectors operate.
