BSc. Food Process Engineering

Food process engineering applies engineering and science to how food is produced, preserved, and packaged. This degree prepares you to design efficient, safe systems that take food from farm to table. At the University of Ghana, the programme sits within the College of Basic and Applied Sciences and is highly competitive to enter.

What food process engineering covers

Programmes like this typically combine engineering principles with food science. You’ll study fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer as they apply to processes like drying, freezing, baking, and sterilisation. Food chemistry and microbiology teach you how ingredients behave and how to keep products safe, while packaging and storage systems help you reduce waste and extend shelf life. Across all of this, you build the skills to design equipment, scale up recipes to factory level, and control quality at every step.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry is highly competitive. The published additional requirement is a B3 in Elective Maths, and the college accepts applicants from Agriculture, General Science, and Home Economics backgrounds. Because competition is strong, you’ll want strong WASSCE results overall, especially in the sciences and maths that support engineering studies. What you can do after graduation

Most food process engineers work in food and beverage manufacturing, where they design and improve production lines, ensure products meet safety standards, and solve problems like spoilage or uneven cooking. Others move into quality assurance, product development, food safety enforcement, or research and development. The combination of engineering and food science also opens roles in equipment design, supply chain management, and food policy.
