What mental health nursing really involves
Mental health nursing focuses on caring for people living with conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It is a clinical role, but it is built on communication and trust. Programmes of this kind usually cover the biology of mental illness, psychological and social factors, nursing theory, and practical placements in hospitals or community settings. You learn how to assess a patient's condition, support them through treatment, and work with their families.
How hard it is to get a place
Entry to this programme is less competitive than many other health and medical science degrees. That does not mean it is easy – you still need to meet the entry requirements and show a genuine interest in mental health care. Where this degree can take you
Most graduates go into nursing in psychiatric hospitals, general hospitals with mental health wards, or community mental health services.
