Check if you qualify

The Diploma in Public Administration at University of Ghana, offered through Distance Education, introduces you to the workings of government and public organisations. It suits SHS leavers who want a practical qualification in the social sciences and a route into public service or further study.

What public administration covers

Programmes of this kind usually explore how public policies are made, implemented, and evaluated. You look at how government ministries, local authorities, and public agencies manage budgets, staff, and services. You also learn about governance, law, and the relationship between citizens and the state. The focus is on practical skills: organising information, understanding regulations, and managing people and resources in the public interest.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry to this programme is less competitive than many other university courses. You need passes (A1-D7) in six subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, at WASSCE or an equivalent level. Because the competition is lower, strong passes in those six subjects should give you a realistic chance of being admitted. You can check your grades against the published requirements to see if you qualify.

Where a diploma can take you

Most graduates start in supporting or administrative roles in the civil service, local government, or public sector agencies. Others go into NGOs, health administration, or the administrative arms of private firms that work closely with government. A diploma also gives you a foundation if you later want to continue to a degree in public administration, political science, or a related social science field.
