HND Renewable Energy Systems Engineering

This programme trains you to design, install and maintain renewable energy systems like solar, wind and biomass. It is a practical engineering diploma offered at Koforidua Technical University's Faculty of Engineering, and it welcomes students from a range of SHS backgrounds.

What you'll learn and do

Programmes of this kind usually cover the principles of renewable energy technologies, including photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, bioenergy and energy storage. You will learn how to assess energy needs, design appropriate systems, and install and troubleshoot equipment. The course also builds practical skills in electrical work, project planning and basic engineering design.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry is less competitive than many other engineering programmes. This means your chances are good if you have completed SHS with General Science, Technical Studies, or Visual Arts. If you took Technical Studies, you already have a head start in workshop practice; if you come from Visual Arts, you bring design thinking and attention to detail that are valuable in this field.

Where the job market is

Renewable energy is a growing sector in Ghana and across the world. Graduates typically work as technicians or engineers for solar and wind companies, utilities, government agencies and non-profits. Many also start their own businesses installing and maintaining solar systems. With experience, you can move into system design, energy auditing, or project management.
