B.Ed Basic Education (Upper Primary P4 - P6)

This degree prepares you to teach in Ghanaian basic schools at the upper primary level, from Primary 4 to Primary 6. The University of Education, Winneba runs it through its School of Education and Life-Long Learning. Entry is less competitive than many other degree programmes, so it is a practical route into teaching.

What you will learn on an upper primary teaching degree

Programmes of this kind usually cover child development for the nine-to-eleven age group, teaching methods for English, mathematics, science and social studies, and how to manage a classroom of upper primary pupils. You will also learn how to assess pupils' progress and adjust your teaching for different learning needs. Most courses include teaching practice, so you will spend time in real classrooms before you graduate. Because the focus is on P4-P6, you will also study how pupils move from lower primary and what they need before they enter junior high school.

Where a B.Ed in Basic Education can take you

Most graduates become primary school teachers, typically teaching at the upper primary level in public or private basic schools across Ghana. The degree can also lead into school administration, curriculum development, or educational materials writing. If you want to continue studying, it provides a foundation for a master's degree in education or a related field.
