Computer engineering sits at the intersection of hardware and software. Ashesi University's B.Sc. Computer Engineering is a degree in computing and information technology, open to students from General Science, Technical Studies, and Visual Arts backgrounds. Entry is less competitive than at some established public universities, but you still need to meet the published requirements.

What computer engineering actually covers

Programmes of this kind combine electrical engineering and computer science. You typically study how computer systems work from the inside out: processors, memory, embedded devices, operating systems, and the software that controls them. Along the way you build skills in circuit design, programming, and systems integration, which graduates use to design everything from mobile phones and traffic systems to medical devices and industrial robots.

How hard is it to get a place

At Ashesi, this programme is less competitive than at some other Ghanaian universities. For comparison, the same programme at University of Ghana and KNUST is highly competitive. Less competitive means you do not need to be in the very top band of WASSCE results, but you must still meet the entry requirements. Ashesi also accepts General Science, Technical Studies, and Visual Arts backgrounds, so students from non-traditional routes are considered.

Where the degree can take you

With a computer engineering degree you can work in hardware, software, or the space in between. Common entry roles for graduates include embedded systems engineer, software engineer, network engineer, and systems designer. You might find yourself in telecoms, banking, manufacturing, or technology startups. The degree also prepares you for further study in computer science, electronics, or robotics.
