Computer engineering combines electronics with computer science, preparing you to work with both the physical components of computers and the software that runs on them. At UENR, this degree is open to students from General Science and Technical Studies backgrounds, and it is less competitive to get into than at many other universities in Ghana.

What computer engineering actually is

Programmes of this kind typically cover digital logic, microprocessors, programming, data structures, operating systems, computer networks, and electronics. You learn to design and build computer hardware, write the software that controls it, and connect systems together. Most graduates go on to work as software developers, hardware engineers, embedded systems designers, or network engineers – or they continue into research or further study.

How hard it is to get a place

Getting into computer engineering at UENR is less competitive than at universities like University of Ghana or KNUST, where the same programme is highly competitive. That does not mean you can ignore your grades – you still need to meet the published requirements. But if your WASSCE results are solid, you stand a reasonable chance of getting a place here.

What you need to have studied

You need credit passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science, plus Elective Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. This is a demanding science programme, and these subjects reflect the level of maths and physics involved. Students from General Science and Technical Studies backgrounds are both admitted.
