Electrical and electronic engineering is about the technology that powers modern life, from the national electricity grid to mobile phones and medical devices. This degree focuses on how to design, build and maintain the systems that generate, transmit and use electrical energy. It combines strong foundations in mathematics and physics with hands-on problem-solving.

What this programme usually covers

Programmes of this kind introduce you to the fundamentals of circuits, electronics, power systems and signals. You will learn how electrical energy is generated, transformed and delivered, and how electronic devices process information. Typical topics include circuit analysis, digital electronics, control systems, telecommunications and electrical machines. Along the way, you build practical skills in testing, measuring and troubleshooting equipment, plus the ability to model systems mathematically.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry to this programme is less competitive than many other engineering degrees, but you still need to meet the academic requirements. You must have passes in Core English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science, plus Elective Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at WASSCE level. If your grades match those subjects, you have a reasonable chance, but always check whether your results qualify before applying.

Graduates work in industries that produce, distribute and use electricity and electronics. Common areas include power generation and distribution, telecommunications, manufacturing, oil and gas, and building services.
