What mechatronic engineering is about
Mechatronic engineering sits where mechanical engineering, electronics, and computing meet. Programmes of this kind typically cover mechanical design, electronic circuits, sensors and actuators, microcontrollers, and control systems. You learn to build machines that sense their environment and act on it—robots, automated production lines, drones, and smart devices. The field trains you to think across disciplines, integrating hardware and software into a single working system.
How hard it is to get a place
At Ashesi, entry to mechatronic engineering is less competitive than some other engineering programmes, but it still requires a solid foundation in science and mathematics. Ashesi considers students from General Science, Technical Studies, and Visual Arts backgrounds. If you took any of these at SHS, your application will be looked at. That said, admission is not guaranteed—you will need to meet the specific grade requirements and submit a strong application. Because it is less competitive, you have a better chance than with more oversubscribed programmes, but you should still aim for good WASSCE results.
