Bachelor of Science (Economics)

Economics is the study of how people, firms, and governments make choices with limited resources. A degree in economics builds strong analytical skills, teaching you to work with data, understand markets, and evaluate policy. At the University of Cape Coast, this programme is offered within the College of Humanities and Legal Studies.

What studying economics is really like

Economics programmes traditionally cover microeconomics (how households and firms decide) and macroeconomics (how the whole economy performs). You will also encounter quantitative methods, econometrics, development economics, and public policy. The emphasis is on using data and logic to answer questions like: What drives inflation? How do taxes affect work? Why do some countries grow faster than others? By graduation, you will have sharpened your ability to reason clearly about cause and effect and to support arguments with evidence.

How competitive is admission?

Entry into this programme is competitive. That means you need strong WASSCE results across your core subjects, but it is not as intensely sought after as the same programme at the University of Ghana or KNUST, where entry is highly competitive. With your grades in hand, you can check your eligibility by comparing them to the published requirements. Demand for economics places across Ghana is high, so a good aggregate will work in your favour.

What economics graduates do afterwards

Most economics graduates go into banking, finance, and insurance, where they analyse markets and assess risk. Others work in government ministries and agencies, in economic research, or as policy analysts. The degree also opens doors to roles in data analysis, consultancy, and international development. Some graduates pursue postgraduate study in economics, finance, or business.
