BSc Biomedical Sciences

Biomedical sciences is the study of the human body at the molecular, cellular and whole-body level, and of how diseases disrupt its normal function. This degree at the University of Cape Coast is run through the College of Health and Allied Sciences and is open to students from a General Science background. It is a highly competitive programme, so applicants need a strong WASSCE performance to stand a chance.

What biomedical sciences actually covers

Programmes of this kind usually start with core biology and chemistry before moving into human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, genetics and pathology. You spend a lot of time in the laboratory learning to handle samples, run diagnostic tests and interpret results. The degree builds practical skills in research methods, data analysis and scientific writing, and it expects you to keep up with fast-moving medical knowledge.

How competitive is the place

Entry to this programme is highly competitive. The college takes students from the General Science background, and as a highly competitive programme, you will be up against many other well-qualified applicants. A strong WASSCE result in your science subjects is essential to be considered for admission.

What graduates do after uni

Most biomedical science graduates go into diagnostic laboratories in hospitals, research institutions or public health laboratories. Others find work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, in quality control, product development or sales. Many also go on to postgraduate study in medicine, pharmacy, public health or biomedical research, which opens up further specialisation.
