What studying optometry involves
Programmes of this kind usually cover the anatomy and physiology of the eye, vision science, and the diagnosis and management of eye conditions. You will learn to perform eye examinations, prescribe corrective lenses, and identify when patients need referral to other specialists. The training also builds clinical skills in patient communication and decision-making.
How competitive the programme is
This is a highly competitive programme, and places are limited. It is similarly competitive at other institutions such as Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Applicants from a General Science background are eligible, but you will need strong WASSCE results to stand out. Where an optometry degree can take you
Most graduates go on to work as optometrists in hospitals, clinics, or private practice. Others work in optical shops, community eye health programmes, or the optical industry. The degree also opens the door to further study and specialisation in areas such as low vision, paediatric optometry, or vision research.
