BSc Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes that sustain life, blending biology and chemistry to explain how cells, molecules, and enzymes work. This programme at the University of Cape Coast is based in the College of Health and Allied Sciences and is open to students with a General Science background.

What biochemistry actually covers

Programmes of this kind usually cover the structures and functions of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids, as well as how enzymes catalyse reactions and how metabolism is regulated. You will learn laboratory techniques such as spectroscopy, chromatography, and molecular biology methods, and you will build skills in analytical thinking, problem-solving, and data interpretation. How hard it is to get a place

Admission to this programme is competitive. As a student from the General Science track, you will be competing with other qualified applicants, and places are not guaranteed. Compared to similar programmes nationally, biochemistry here is more competitive than at C. K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences, but less competitive than at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. You will need strong WASSCE results in the required science subjects, but the exact cutoff is not published here, so check your own grades against the university's admission requirements.

What you can do as a graduate

Most biochemistry graduates go into research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or the food and beverage industry.
