Cyber security is the field of protecting computers, networks and data from attack or theft. Programmes of this kind usually cover network security, ethical hacking, digital forensics and information risk management, building both technical and analytical skills. The BSc Cyber Security at the University of Mines and Technology is offered through the Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences.

What cyber security programmes cover

Cyber security degrees typically start with the fundamentals of computing and networking, then move into how to secure systems and respond to breaches. You learn how to identify vulnerabilities, think like an attacker, and put in place defences. Many programmes also touch on data protection laws, cybercrime and the ethics of hacking.

How hard it is to get a place

This programme is less competitive than many computing degrees, which means that meeting the entry requirements and having a solid WASSCE result should put you in a good position. Several other Ghanaian universities, including Accra Technical University and Ghana Communication Technology University, also offer the same programme at a similar level of competition.

To apply, you need credits in any three of these subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, ICT, Elective Mathematics, Economics, Government, Accounting, Business Management or Costing.
