Check if you qualify

Ophthalmic nursing focuses on the care of people with eye problems, from checking vision to supporting patients through treatment and surgery. This degree prepares you to work in eye clinics, hospitals, and community eye-care programmes. It is offered at public nursing training colleges in Ghana and is a practical path into a specialised branch of nursing.

What ophthalmic nursing actually involves

Programmes of this kind usually cover the anatomy of the eye, common eye diseases, vision testing, and how to care for patients before and after procedures like cataract surgery. You also learn how to manage eye emergencies, give medicines correctly, and teach patients to look after their eyes at home. The work is hands-on and calls for patience, precision, and clear communication with people of all ages.

How competitive a place is

Entry to this programme is less competitive than for many other degree-level health courses, but it still requires you to meet the published requirements. You will need three electives in General Arts, Science, or Health Sciences. Because each college sets its own specific grade expectations, check with the college you are interested in to see whether your WASSCE results qualify.

Where ophthalmic nurses work

Most graduates go into eye units in hospitals, specialised eye clinics, and community screening programmes for diseases like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Some later move into roles training other health workers, managing eye-care services, or coordinating public health campaigns focused on preventing blindness.
