Check if you qualify

Peri-operative nursing focuses on caring for patients before, during, and after surgery. This degree prepares you to work in operating theatres and surgical units, where you will help keep patients safe and comfortable through every stage of a procedure. It suits someone who stays calm under pressure and wants a hands-on clinical role in a hospital environment.

What peri-operative nursing actually covers

Programmes of this kind usually teach the full surgical patient journey: preoperative assessment and preparation, assisting the surgical team during the operation, and postoperative recovery and monitoring. You will learn aseptic techniques, infection control, anaesthesia support, instrument handling, and how to respond quickly when complications arise. Expect to build strong skills in teamwork, communication, attention to detail, and caring for people who are anxious or in pain.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry is less competitive than many other health and medical science programmes. You need three electives in General Arts, Science, or Health Sciences in your WASSCE, and you must meet the general admission requirements of the nursing training college you apply to. Because the programme is less competitive, your chances are reasonable if you satisfy the subject requirements and your grades are up to the college's standard. Check your own grades against the current admission criteria to be sure.

Where this degree can take you

Most graduates go into theatre nursing in public or private hospitals, working as part of the surgical team in operating rooms, recovery rooms, or same-day surgery units. With experience, you can specialise in a particular type of surgery, such as cardiac, orthopaedic, or maternity theatre work. You might also move into surgical ward management, teaching, or further study in nursing education or advanced clinical practice.
