What a Nurse Assistant Preventive does
Nurse Assistant Preventives focus on stopping illness before it starts. Their typical duties include teaching individuals and communities about hygiene, nutrition, and sanitation, assisting with immunisation sessions, and supporting maternal and child health clinics. Training programmes of this kind build skills in health education, basic observation, record-keeping, and communication, so that you can work confidently alongside nurses and health officers. Most graduates spend their time in community settings, such as health centres, outreach posts, and home visits.
Entry requirements and how competitive it is
Getting a place on the NAP certificate is less competitive than many other health programmes. The published requirement is three electives with passes (A1 to E8) in WASSCE – any grade within that range counts as a pass. Because the programme is less competitive, you are not required to have exceptional grades, though you must still meet the basic requirement.
Career options after you graduate
Most NAP graduates find work in community health. You could be employed by the Ghana Health Service as a nurse assistant preventive, based at a health centre or CHPS compound, where you will run health education talks, assist with immunisations, and support mothers and children. Others work in clinics and hospitals, providing preventive services and helping nursing teams. With experience, some graduates pursue further training in nursing or public health, which opens up more senior roles.
