Check if you qualifyBachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is a degree in the College of Health Sciences that trains you to become a dental professional. It is fee-paying only, and entry is highly competitive. If you are considering this programme, here is what you can expect from the field and how difficult it is to get a place.
What dental surgery actually involves
Programmes of this kind combine clinical and theoretical training in oral health, diagnosing and treating conditions of the teeth, gums and jaw. You will study anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology, alongside practical clinical work where you learn to perform procedures such as fillings, extractions and oral surgeries. Most graduates go on to work as dentists, either running their own practice, working in hospitals, or specialising further in areas like orthodontics or oral and maxillofacial surgery.
How competitive a place is
This programme is highly competitive. Expect strong competition from applicants across Ghana, as the same programme at the University of Ghana is also highly competitive. Since the BDS is fee-paying only, be prepared for additional costs beyond what you would pay for a regular programme.
Which SHS backgrounds are considered
The College of Health Sciences admits applicants from three SHS backgrounds: General Science, Agriculture, and Home Economics. If you come from one of these backgrounds and have strong grades in science-related subjects, you can be considered. Keep in mind that, given how competitive the programme is, your grades will need to be very solid to stand out.
