What nursing really involves

Programmes of this kind usually cover anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, nutrition, and public health, alongside clinical skills like taking vital signs, administering medication, and managing patient records. You learn to assess a patient’s condition, plan care, and work in a team with doctors and other health professionals. Beyond the science, nursing builds empathy, resilience, and the ability to make calm decisions under pressure.

How hard it is to get a place

Nursing at KNUST is highly competitive. That means even with strong WASSCE grades, there is no guarantee of admission, and you will be competing with many other qualified applicants. The College of Health Sciences admits students from Agriculture, General Science, and Home Economics backgrounds, so if you come from one of these, you are eligible to apply. Where a nursing degree can take you

Most nursing graduates go into hospital nursing, working in wards, intensive care units, or theatres. Others move into community health, school nursing, or public health education. With further study, you can specialise as a nurse anaesthetist, midwife, or nurse practitioner, or move into health management and nursing education.
