Check if you qualifyBSc Nursing at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology's Obuasi Campus prepares you for a career in healthcare. Nursing programmes of this kind combine science with practical patient care, building the skills hospitals and communities rely on. Entry is highly competitive, and the college accepts SHS backgrounds from Business, General Science, and Home Economics.
What nursing study involves
Nursing programmes usually cover human anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and public health, alongside supervised clinical placements in hospitals and clinics. You learn how to assess patients, administer treatment and communicate with people under stress. The work is hands-on and science-based, requiring both practical skill and strong judgement.
How competitive the programme is
Getting a place on this programme is highly competitive, in line with nursing at the University of Health and Allied Sciences and the University of Cape Coast. Entry is also competitive at the University of Ghana, while the Catholic University of Ghana is less competitive. The Obuasi Campus admits SHS graduates from Business, General Science and Home Economics, so competition goes beyond pure science students. You will need strong WASSCE results to stand out, as with any highly competitive health programme.
Where nursing can take you
Most graduates go into clinical nursing in hospitals, clinics and primary care settings. Others move into public health, nurse education, research or management. With further training, nursing can lead to midwifery, psychiatric nursing or specialist roles in surgery, paediatrics or intensive care.
