What midwifery programmes actually teach

Midwifery is a health profession centred on pregnancy, labour, birth, and the care of mother and baby in the weeks after delivery. Programmes of this kind usually cover anatomy and physiology, maternal and newborn health, clinical skills, and public health, alongside practical placements in maternity settings. Most graduates develop strong clinical judgement, communication skills, and the ability to respond calmly in emergencies.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry to the Bachelor of Midwifery at UHAS is highly competitive. This is typical of the course at other universities such as KNUST and the University of Cape Coast, where demand also outstrips places. It is important to check the published WASSCE requirements to see whether your grades put you in a strong position. As with any highly competitive programme, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a place.

Where a midwifery degree can take you

Most graduates go on to work as registered midwives in hospitals, maternity homes, and community health facilities. Others move into maternal and child health advocacy, education, or hospital administration, or continue into postgraduate study in areas such as neonatal nursing or reproductive health. The qualification also opens doors to practice in both urban and rural settings, as well as opportunities to work internationally after meeting local registration requirements.
