BSc. Midwifery

BSc Midwifery at the University of Ghana is a degree in the College of Health Sciences that prepares students to care for women through pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. The programme is competitive, accepting strong applicants from General Science and Home Economics backgrounds. Midwifery is a demanding but deeply rewarding healthcare profession.

What midwifery actually covers

Programmes of this kind typically combine classroom study with hands-on clinical training. You will learn about anatomy and physiology, maternal and newborn care, family planning, and public health. Much of the training focuses on practical skills: conducting deliveries, recognising complications, and providing emotional support to mothers and families. You will also develop communication and decision-making abilities essential in fast-moving hospital environments.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry to this programme is competitive. Like other public universities, the University of Ghana sets high standards for its health programmes. If you are coming from General Science or Home Economics, you will need to meet specific subject requirements on top of the general WASSCE cut-off. Similar BSc Midwifery programmes at institutions such as the University of Health and Allied Sciences and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology are even more competitive, while some private universities are less so. What midwifery graduates do

Most midwives work directly in maternity units, antenatal clinics and community health centres, managing pregnancies, assisting births and providing postpartum care. The profession gives you the chance to improve maternal and child health outcomes, which remains an urgent need in Ghana.
