Check if you qualifyThe Bachelor of Public Health at the University of Ghana is a degree in Health & Medical Sciences, offered through the College of Health Sciences. It prepares you to understand and improve the health of populations, rather than treating individual patients one at a time. If you are a General Science or Home Economics student aiming for a career in public health, this programme is one of the most competitive of its kind in Ghana.
What public health graduates study and do
Programmes of this kind usually cover disease prevention, health promotion, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, and health policy. You learn how to analyse health data, design community health interventions, and address health challenges faced by populations. Most graduates go into public service, hospitals, non-governmental organisations, and international health agencies, working as health officers, project coordinators, or researchers.
How competitive entry is
Getting a place to study Public Health at the University of Ghana is highly competitive. This means you will need strong WASSCE grades to stand out. It is more competitive than the same programme at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, and far more competitive than at Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development or Catholic University of Ghana. You should check whether your own grades meet the expected cut-offs, as admitted applicants typically do well in their core science subjects.
Who can apply
The College of Health Sciences admits SHS graduates from General Science and Home Economics backgrounds. If you studied either of these tracks, you are eligible to apply.
