Check if you qualifyActuarial science is a field that uses mathematics and statistics to assess risk in insurance, finance, and other sectors. The University of Ghana offers this degree within its College of Basic and Applied Sciences. Admission is highly competitive, so strong grades are essential.
What actuarial science actually involves
Actuarial science is all about using mathematics, statistics, and financial theory to analyse risk and uncertainty. Programmes of this kind usually cover probability, financial mathematics, economics, and investment management. You will learn to build models that help insurers and pension funds stay solvent, and you will develop strong problem-solving and analytical skills that are useful in many industries.
How competitive is admission?
Getting a place on this programme is highly competitive. The University of Ghana admits students from Agriculture, General Science, and Home Economics backgrounds through its College of Basic and Applied Sciences. If your grades are strong, it is worth applying — but be aware that the same programme is also highly competitive at KNUST and University of Cape Coast. A number of other universities in Ghana offer it with less competition, which might be worth considering if you want more options.
What actuarial graduates go on to do
Most actuarial science graduates become actuaries, working for insurance companies, pension funds, banks, or consultancies. Others move into risk management, investment analysis, or data science. The core skill — understanding and pricing risk — is valued across finance and business.
