Check if you qualifyActuarial science uses mathematics, statistics, and financial theory to measure and manage risk. The BSc Actuarial Science at the University of Energy and Natural Resources is offered under the School of Sciences and follows the standard shape of actuarial science degrees, with entry less competitive than at some other Ghanaian universities. It is a realistic option for SHS leavers who meet the subject requirements.
What actuarial science really is
Actuarial science is the profession of measuring and managing risk. Think of insurance companies, pension schemes, and banks that need to know how future events like accidents, illness, and investment returns will affect their money. To do that, actuaries use advanced mathematics, statistics, and financial theory. Degree programmes like this one typically build a strong foundation in probability, financial mathematics, statistical modelling, and the principles of insurance and pensions. You will spend a lot of time on numbers, but the goal is always practical: making decisions under uncertainty.
How hard it is to get a place
Entry is less competitive than the same degree at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Ghana, or University of Cape Coast, where it is highly competitive. This means your grades do not need to be at the very top for a realistic chance, but you must still meet the published requirements: core English, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science, plus elective Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The School of Sciences accepts SHS backgrounds in Business, General Science, and Technical Studies. Check whether your own WASSCE results satisfy the requirements before applying.
Where actuarial science can take you
Most actuarial science graduates start as actuarial analysts or risk analysts in insurance companies, pension funds, banks, and consulting firms. With further study and professional exams, you can become a fully qualified actuary, a role that is in demand across the financial industry. The skills you build — statistical modelling, forecasting, and decision-making under uncertainty — are also relevant to data science and business analytics. Some graduates go into auditing, investment, or even government departments that manage public pensions and social security.
