What Physician Assistantship actually involves
Programmes like this cover the fundamentals of clinical medicine: anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology and patient care. You learn how to take medical histories, perform physical examinations, interpret laboratory results, prescribe basic medicines and manage common illnesses. Most of the training is practical, with much of it spent in clinical attachments where you work directly with patients under supervision. Graduates are equipped to handle emergency care, maternal and child health, and the diagnosis and treatment of everyday conditions.
How hard it is to get a place
This course is less competitive to enter than similar degree programmes in Ghana. For comparison, the same field at the University of Health and Allied Sciences is highly competitive, while Central University and Presbyterian University are also less competitive. The published additional requirements are three WASSCE electives in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or other relevant electives. Since entry is less competitive, meeting this subject requirement is important, but you should still check your grades against the official admission criteria for the nursing training colleges.
Where this qualification can take you
Most graduates become physician assistants in hospitals, district health centres and primary care clinics, especially in rural and underserved areas where doctors are few. Others go into emergency medicine, maternal and child health, community health education, or health administration. The qualification also provides a strong foundation for further study in medicine, public health or other health-related fields.
