What studying pharmacy involves

Core areas often include pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutics, and clinical pharmacy, along with practical placements in hospitals or community settings.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry to pharmacy programmes in Ghana tends to be very competitive, but at Central University it is less competitive than at some public universities. For comparison, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, and University of Ghana all describe their pharmacy programmes as highly competitive. Central University admits students with a General Science background, so if your WASSCE grades are not at the very top but you meet the subject requirements, this could be a more accessible route into the profession.

What pharmacy graduates do after graduation

Most graduates go on to become licensed pharmacists, working in community pharmacies, hospitals, or clinics. Others find roles in the pharmaceutical industry – in drug manufacturing, quality control, or regulatory affairs – or in research and academia. The degree also provides a strong foundation for further study in clinical pharmacy, public health, or pharmacology.
