Agricultural and Resource Economics programmes generally start with core economics: supply and demand, market structures, prices, and macroeconomics. From there, the focus shifts to agriculture and the environment, covering topics such as farm management, land and water use, food systems, rural development, and environmental policy. Students also spend time on quantitative methods—statistics, data analysis, and simple economic modelling—because much of the field involves interpreting numbers and measuring trade-offs. The goal is to apply economic thinking to real problems: Why do food prices rise? How should a farmer allocate land between crops? What happens to water resources when demand grows? Graduates leave with skills in analysis, problem-solving, and communication—able to explain how agricultural and environmental decisions affect people, markets, and the economy.

How difficult is it to get a place?

Entry to this programme is less competitive than to many other degree courses in Ghana. That means the threshold is more accessible, but you still need to meet the published subject requirements. For the core, you need Core English, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Social Studies. For electives, the accepted subjects are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Agriculture, or Elective Mathematics. The School of Agriculture and Technology admits students from an agriculture background at SHS, so if you took Agriculture, your background fits. Most graduates from agricultural and resource economics programmes go into careers where they combine economic knowledge with an understanding of farming and the environment.
