What studying nursing really involves

Nursing programmes typically cover the sciences behind health and illness: anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and nutrition. Most courses include clinical placements where you practise in hospitals or clinics under supervision, so you graduate with real experience as well as theory.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry to this programme is less competitive than at many other universities. For comparison, KNUST, UHAS, and UCC are highly competitive, and the University of Ghana is competitive. Presbyterian University offers a more accessible route, but you still need the right background. You must have studied General Arts, General Science, or Home Economics, with a minimum of C6 in English, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science. If you have those grades, you can apply and check whether you qualify.

Where a nursing degree can take you

Most nursing graduates go straight into hospital work as registered nurses, often in medical-surgical wards, paediatrics, or emergency care. Others choose public health and work in clinics, schools, or community outreach, preventing disease and promoting health. With further study or experience, you can move into midwifery, nursing education, or hospital management.
