What a physician assistant does
Physician assistants work as the first point of contact for many patients. They take medical histories, perform physical exams, order and interpret tests, make diagnoses, and prescribe treatments. They also carry out minor procedures and provide health education. In Ghana, physician assistants often lead care teams in district hospitals and rural health centres, with a doctor available by phone or for referrals.
Getting into the programme
This is a competitive programme, so you will need strong grades and a General Science background from SHS. At University of Cape Coast, entry is competitive, while the same degree at KNUST and University of Ghana is highly competitive. If you have strong science results, it is worth applying, but you should also consider your qualifications carefully before committing.
