BSc Geomatic Engineering

Geomatic engineering brings together surveying, mapping, and spatial data science. What geomatic engineering actually covers

Programmes of this kind usually cover land surveying, geodesy, cartography, remote sensing, and geographic information systems (GIS). You learn how to collect spatial data with instruments like total stations and GPS, process it with specialised software, and turn it into maps, models, and reports. The field also touches on photogrammetry, which uses aerial images to create accurate maps, and digital terrain modelling used in engineering and mining projects.

How hard it is to get a place

Admission to this programme is less competitive than to many other engineering courses, so your chances are good if you meet the subject requirements. You need credits in any three of Physics, Mathematics, or Geography, and Chemistry can be substituted for Geography. The University of Mines and Technology accepts SHS backgrounds in General Science, Technical Studies, and Visual Arts, so students from these streams are welcome to apply.
