BSc Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the design, analysis, and manufacture of machines and mechanical systems. This degree is offered in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Mines and Technology. Mechanical engineers are needed in many industries, including manufacturing, energy, and mining.

What studying mechanical engineering involves

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines. Programmes of this kind typically cover engineering mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, manufacturing processes, and machine design. You will develop skills in problem-solving, computer-aided design, and project management. Graduates commonly work in industries such as manufacturing, energy, automotive, and mining, where they design, build, and maintain mechanical systems.

How hard it is to get a place

This programme is less competitive than the same course at some other universities. For instance, mechanical engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is highly competitive, while at UMaT it is less competitive. To apply, you need WASSCE credits in any three of these subjects: Physics, Mathematics, Applied Electricity or Electronics, ICT or Computer Studies, Technical Drawing or Metal Work. Chemistry can be substituted with Technical Drawing or Metal Work. The university considers applications from General Science and Technical Studies students.
