What geological engineering actually involves

Geological engineering combines geology with engineering principles to solve practical problems involving the earth. Programmes of this kind typically cover rock mechanics, soil mechanics, hydrogeology, geophysics, surveying, and mining geology. You learn to assess ground conditions for buildings, roads, and tunnels, to find and manage groundwater, and to work safely in mining and oil extraction. The degree builds strong skills in problem-solving, field observation, and data analysis, and it involves outdoor work as well as classroom learning.

How hard it is to get a place

Entry to this programme at the University of Mines and Technology is less competitive than the same programme at some other Ghanaian universities. For example, the same degree at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is highly competitive, so UMaT may offer a more accessible route into geological engineering. You can check whether your WASSCE grades meet the published subject requirements.

What you need to have studied

To be considered, you need credits in any three of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Geography. The college accepts students from General Science, Technical Studies, and Visual Arts backgrounds, so even if you studied Visual Arts, you can apply as long as you have the required subjects. This is a useful flexibility for students who took a non-science route in SHS.
