What minerals engineering really involves
Minerals engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the extraction and processing of minerals from the earth. Programmes of this kind typically cover topics such as geology, mine design, drilling and blasting, mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, and environmental management. You will learn how to turn raw ore into valuable concentrates and metals using techniques like crushing, grinding, flotation, and leaching. The degree builds practical skills in mathematics, chemistry, and physics, along with problem-solving and project planning. Most graduates of minerals engineering programmes go into the mining industry as mining engineers, mineral processing engineers, or plant managers. Others work for equipment suppliers, engineering consultancies, or government bodies that regulate mining. In Ghana, this often means work in gold, bauxite, or manganese operations.
How competitive entry is
At the University of Mines and Technology, entry to the BSc Minerals Engineering programme is less competitive than for many engineering degrees. To be considered, you need WASSCE credits in any three of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Geography. The programme accepts SHS graduates from Agricultural, General Science, and Technical Studies backgrounds.
