Check if you qualifyDrilling fluids technology is a specialised area of petroleum engineering that keeps drilling safe and efficient. This certificate at the University of Mines and Technology gives you practical knowledge of the fluids used on rigs. It is a good fit if you want a technical career in oil and gas.
What drilling fluids technology is about
Drilling fluids technology focuses on the mixtures, usually called drilling mud, used to cool and lubricate the drill bit, carry cuttings to the surface, and keep the wellbore stable. Programmes of this kind typically cover the chemistry and physics of these fluids, how to test and adjust their properties, and how to handle them safely on site. Most graduates go on to work in oil and gas exploration, often as drilling fluids engineers or mud technicians.
Who this programme is for
This certificate is designed for anyone with a background in General Arts, General Science, or Technical Studies. Classes run on weekends only, so you can fit the study around work or other commitments. Because the entry requirement is an SHS certificate in any of these areas, the programme is less competitive than many engineering courses. That means if you meet the general admission criteria, you have a good chance of getting in. Check with UMaT whether your grades qualify.
