The Certificate in Electrical Technology is a practical engineering programme for SHS leavers who want hands-on skills in electrical work. It is offered by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Mines and Technology and runs on weekends only. If you are from General Science or Technical Studies and looking for a less competitive route into the electrical field, this programme is worth considering.

What you learn in electrical technology

Programmes of this kind teach you the fundamentals of electricity, including direct and alternating current, basic circuits, wiring, electrical machines, and safety. You learn how to install, test, and maintain electrical equipment and systems. The focus is on practical competence, so a lot of the work involves tools, meters, and real installations rather than purely written theory.

How competitive it is and who can apply

This certificate is in the less competitive band, so getting a place may be easier than on more popular engineering programmes. You can apply from either a General Science or Technical Studies SHS background.
