What midwifery is about
Midwifery programmes cover care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. You learn to monitor the health of mother and baby, handle deliveries, and support new mothers with breastfeeding and newborn care. The training builds clinical judgement, practical skills, and the ability to communicate clearly under pressure.
How hard it is to get in
This is a highly competitive programme, and it is generally more competitive than the same course at some private universities in Ghana. KNUST's Obuasi Campus accepts students from Business, General Science, and Home Economics at the SHS level. To be considered, you need strong WASSCE results and should confirm that your subject grades meet the published requirements.
Where the degree can take you
Most midwifery graduates work as registered midwives in public or private health facilities. Others go into community health, maternal health education, or further study in a specialised clinical area. The practical nature of the degree means you can start working soon after registration, and the demand for skilled midwives in Ghana is high.
