What renewable energy engineers do
Programmes of this kind usually cover the principles of electricity, mechanics, and energy conversion, as well as how to design and manage systems that use renewable sources. You learn how to size solar arrays, assess wind resources, work with biomass and hydro systems, and help connect these to the grid. Most graduates go into companies that install or maintain solar panels, wind turbines, or other clean energy systems, or into government agencies, utilities, and project development firms.
How hard it is to get a place
Entry is less competitive than for many other engineering programmes, meaning your grades do not need to be as high as for more heavily oversubscribed fields. However, you must satisfy the subject credit requirements: credits in any three of Physics, Mathematics, Applied Electricity or Electronics, ICT or Computer Studies, Technical Drawing or Metal Work. Chemistry can be substituted with Applied Electricity or Electronics. Since universities can change thresholds, you should verify with the institution whether your own grades qualify.
Who can apply
The Faculty of Engineering accepts students from General Science and Technical Studies backgrounds. If you took Technical Studies, subjects like Technical Drawing or Metal Work can count toward the required credits. The flexible subject list means you do not need to have studied Physics and Mathematics together, though having both is often helpful for the engineering content. The same programme at the University of Energy and Natural Resources is also less competitive, so you have options if you want to apply to more than one school.
